Luxembourg City
Luxembourg City is the capital of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg, a remarkable fortress city built into dramatic gorges with extraordinary fortification heritage as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, combining beautiful old town architecture, the impressive Bock Casemates underground fortifications, excellent Michelin-starred dining reflecting the city's wealth and international population, and a sophisticated banking centre character that creates a uniquely compact yet cosmopolitan European capital experience.
Elect's take
"Luxembourg City has a dramatic physical setting that I find genuinely surprising — the old town perched on cliffs above deep gorges, with the fortifications and casemates creating an extraordinary defensive architecture unlike anywhere else in Europe."
The Bock Casemates are an extraordinary network of underground fortifications carved into the rock beneath the old town, representing one of the most significant fortified sites in Europe and a UNESCO World Heritage Site reflecting Luxembourg's historical strategic importance. The old town, perched dramatically on cliffs above the Alzette and Pétrusse valleys, provides beautiful views across the gorges via the Chemin de la Corniche, often described as Europe's most beautiful balcony. Luxembourg has one of the highest concentrations of Michelin stars per capita in the world, reflecting both its wealth and the diversity of its international population. The Grand Ducal Palace provides the official residence of Luxembourg's monarchy. The Mudam contemporary art museum is excellent.
