Elect's take

"Melaka is the Malaysian destination that most consistently rewards curiosity. The combination of the extraordinary multicultural heritage, outstanding Nyonya cuisine and beautiful colonial architecture creates something I find genuinely captivating and different from anywhere else in Southeast Asia."

The UNESCO World Heritage Site of Melaka's historic city is a remarkable accumulation of 500 years of colonial heritage. The Portuguese A Famosa fort ruins, the Dutch Stadthuys — the oldest Dutch building in Asia — the beautiful Christ Church and rows of Peranakan shophouses on Jonker Street create an extraordinary cultural landscape. The Baba-Nyonya Peranakan culture, created by the intermarriage of Chinese traders with local Malay women, is expressed through unique architecture and outstanding cuisine — laksa, chicken rice and nyonya kueh — explored in the Baba-Nyonya Heritage Museum. The Jonker Street Night Market every Friday and Saturday is excellent.
