Bazaruto Island
Bazaruto Island is the largest island in the Bazaruto Archipelago, a UNESCO-recognised marine national park off Mozambique's coast combining pristine white sand dunes, beautiful turquoise water, outstanding diving and snorkelling, one of the last viable populations of dugongs in East Africa and exceptional fly fishing. With a small number of exclusive luxury lodges, Bazaruto Island provides one of the Indian Ocean's most remote and unspoiled luxury island experiences.
Elect's take
"Bazaruto provides a level of remoteness and natural beauty that I find genuinely exceptional. The dunes, the dugongs and the pristine reefs create something that feels like a completely undiscovered alternative to the more developed Indian Ocean islands."
The Bazaruto Archipelago National Park protects one of the last viable dugong populations in East African waters, alongside outstanding coral reefs, five species of turtle and exceptional fish diversity. The sand dunes of Bazaruto Island, some rising over 100 metres, create a dramatic desert-meets-ocean landscape unlike anywhere else in the region. The diving and snorkelling on the surrounding reefs is outstanding with excellent visibility and diverse marine life. Fly fishing for giant trevally and other game species in the channels around the archipelago is considered world class. The lodges on Bazaruto are exclusive and limited in number, providing genuine seclusion.
