Glasgow
Glasgow is Scotland's largest and most dynamic city, a proud working class city of extraordinary architectural heritage, world class art collections in the Kelvingrove and the Burrell Collection, the remarkable legacy of Charles Rennie Mackintosh, an outstanding music and nightlife scene and a warmth of character and humour that makes it one of the most genuinely welcoming cities in Britain. Often overlooked in favour of Edinburgh, Glasgow consistently rewards visitors who give it the time it deserves.
Elect's take
"Glasgow has a directness and a warmth that I find genuinely appealing. The combination of world class art, outstanding architecture and a city that is completely authentic in its character creates something that I find more engaging than many more famous European cities."
The Kelvingrove Art Gallery is one of the finest regional art museums in Europe, housing an extraordinary collection including outstanding Spanish, Flemish and Scottish painting alongside remarkable natural history and decorative art collections — all free of charge. The Burrell Collection, recently reopened after restoration, houses Sir William Burrell's extraordinary private art collection in a beautiful park setting. The architectural legacy of Charles Rennie Mackintosh, expressed through the Glasgow School of Art, the Willow Tea Rooms and numerous other buildings, is one of the great contributions to British design. The music scene, which produced Mogwai, Franz Ferdinand and Frightened Rabbit, is outstanding. The Merchant City food scene is excellent.
