Elect's take

"Bratislava is one of Europe's most underrated capital cities. The combination of the beautiful old town, the dramatic castle, excellent value dining and the proximity to both Vienna and Budapest creates a destination that rewards even a short visit."

Bratislava Castle, rebuilt and restored, dominates the city from its hilltop position above the Danube and provides outstanding views across the river toward Austria and Hungary. The compact old town is a beautiful pedestrianised area of medieval and Baroque buildings, with St Martin's Cathedral having served as the coronation church of the Kingdom of Hungary. The quirky bronze statue of Čumil, a worker peeking out from a manhole, is one of Bratislava's most photographed curiosities. Devín Castle, a dramatic ruin at the confluence of the Danube and Morava rivers marking the Austrian border, provides outstanding views and historical significance. The wine bars and restaurants of the old town offer excellent value.
