Taichung
Taichung is Taiwan's third largest city and a destination of outstanding contemporary architecture, beautiful National Taichung Theater designed by Toyo Ito, vibrant night market culture, the extraordinary Rainbow Village folk art installation and easy access to the mountain scenery of Sun Moon Lake. Known for its pleasant climate and more relaxed pace than Taipei, Taichung provides an excellent introduction to central Taiwan's culture and natural beauty.
Elect's take
"Taichung has a quality of contemporary architecture and a relaxed pace that I find very appealing. The National Taichung Theater is extraordinary, the night markets are excellent and the access to Sun Moon Lake makes it a great base for exploring central Taiwan."
The National Taichung Theater, designed by Pritzker Prize winner Toyo Ito, is one of the most extraordinary contemporary buildings in Asia, its cave-like interior of curving concrete walls creating a genuinely unique architectural experience that houses world class performing arts. Rainbow Village is a small neighbourhood of houses covered in colourful folk art paintings created by a single elderly veteran, now a beloved cultural attraction. Fengjia Night Market is one of Taiwan's largest and most popular night markets with outstanding street food. Sun Moon Lake, Taiwan's largest lake with beautiful mountain scenery and cable car access, is approximately 90 minutes away. The Taichung bubble tea heritage, the city being the claimed birthplace of the drink, is celebrated throughout.
