Barranquilla
Barranquilla is Colombia's principal Caribbean port city, the birthplace of Shakira and home to the second largest carnival in the world after Rio de Janeiro, combining a vibrant Caribbean coastal culture, the beautifully regenerated Gran Malecón riverfront on the Magdalena River, outstanding Caribbean-Colombian cuisine, and an energetic and welcoming character distinctly different from the Andean cities of the interior. From the Carnaval de Barranquilla to the Caribbean beaches nearby, Barranquilla offers Colombia's Caribbean coast at its most authentic.
Elect's take
"Barranquilla's Carnival is one of the great cultural celebrations of Latin America, and even outside the carnival season the city has an energy and a Caribbean warmth that I find genuinely infectious."
The Carnaval de Barranquilla, a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage event held each February, is the second largest carnival in the world, a four-day celebration of parades, music, dance and elaborate costumes reflecting the city's mix of indigenous, African and Spanish cultural heritage. The Gran Malecón del Río provides a beautifully regenerated waterfront along the Magdalena River with parks, restaurants and views. The city's Caribbean cuisine, featuring fresh seafood, coconut rice and arepas de huevo, is excellent. Barranquilla's connection to global pop culture through Shakira, who grew up here, is celebrated throughout the city. The beaches of the Caribbean coast, including access to Cartagena approximately 2 hours away, provide further coastal exploration.
