Rionegro
Rionegro is a historic town in Antioquia near Medellín, home to José María Córdova International Airport and providing access to the beautiful Lake Guatapé, the famous painted town of Guatapé with its colourful zócalos (decorative panels), the dramatic Piedra del Peñol monolith, and the surrounding eastern Antioquia countryside of coffee farms and country estates. As both a practical airport gateway and a base for exploring some of Antioquia's most beautiful scenery, Rionegro offers convenience alongside genuine attractions.
Elect's take
"Rionegro is primarily valuable for its airport convenience and proximity to Guatapé and the Piedra del Peñol — one of the most striking rock formations I have seen, with views across the lake region that are genuinely spectacular."
La Piedra del Peñol is a massive granite monolith rising 200 metres above the surrounding landscape, with a staircase of over 700 steps leading to a viewing platform offering spectacular panoramic views across Lake Guatapé and the surrounding hills. The nearby town of Guatapé is famous for its zócalos — brightly coloured decorative relief panels on the lower facades of houses, depicting everything from family histories to whimsical designs, creating one of Colombia's most photogenic towns. Lake Guatapé itself, an artificial reservoir, provides boat trips and water activities. Rionegro's own historic centre retains colonial character, and José María Córdova International Airport serving Medellín is located here, making it a practical arrival point for exploring eastern Antioquia.
