Pisa
Pisa is one of Italy's most recognisable destinations, famous worldwide for the Leaning Tower but hiding a remarkable depth of Romanesque heritage in the Field of Miracles, a beautiful medieval city centre, outstanding Pisan cuisine and easy access to the Tuscan coast and the hill towns of Lucca and Volterra. Much more than the sum of its most famous attraction, Pisa rewards those who stay beyond the tower.
Elect's take
"Pisa is consistently underestimated. The Field of Miracles is genuinely extraordinary beyond just the Leaning Tower, and the combination of a beautiful old city, excellent food, the proximity to Lucca and the Tuscan coast makes it an outstanding base."
The Campo dei Miracoli, or Field of Miracles, contains not only the famous Leaning Tower but the magnificent Cathedral, the Baptistery and the extraordinary Camposanto, making it one of the finest concentrations of Romanesque architecture in the world. The Leaning Tower provides extraordinary views from the top. The medieval city centre along the Arno banks is beautiful, with the Lungarni promenades particularly atmospheric in the evening. Lucca, one of the most perfectly preserved medieval walled cities in Italy, is approximately 30 minutes by rail. The Tuscan coast at Viareggio and the Cinque Terre are accessible within 90 minutes.
