Lesotho
Lesotho is a remarkable highland kingdom entirely surrounded by South Africa, offering dramatic mountain scenery, authentic Basotho culture, pony trekking routes and a genuine sense of remoteness. Known as the Kingdom in the Sky, it provides an extraordinary contrast to the surrounding lowlands.
Elect's take
"Lesotho is unlike anywhere else in the region. The mountain landscapes are dramatic, the culture is genuine and the sense of being truly remote is something increasingly difficult to find in southern Africa."
The Maluti Mountains cover most of Lesotho and provide some of the most dramatic highland scenery in Africa. The landscape shifts from sweeping grasslands to rocky peaks and deep river gorges. Lesotho also provides excellent ski facilities during winter months, making it the only country in Africa where skiing is a genuine draw. The Basotho people are known for their warmth, colourful blankets and conical hats and cultural encounters feel entirely authentic.
