Elect's take

"Cáceres is genuinely extraordinary. The old town at night is one of the most magical experiences I have had in Spain, a perfectly preserved medieval city that feels untouched by modern tourism in the best possible way."

The Ciudad Monumental is extraordinary — the concentration of towers, palaces and churches creates an atmosphere that feels genuinely medieval, particularly in the evening when the streets empty and the golden stone is illuminated against the dark sky. Game of Thrones was filmed here. The Plaza Mayor has excellent restaurants serving outstanding Extremaduran regional cuisine. The jamón from the black Ibérian pigs of Extremadura is considered the finest in Spain.
