"León has a quality that I find genuinely remarkable. The cathedral is extraordinary and the concentration of Romanesque and Gothic heritage combined with outstanding food and the proud Leonese identity creates a destination that deserves to be much better known."
The Cathedral of León is one of the great Gothic buildings of Europe. The extraordinary quantity and quality of its medieval stained glass, creating a luminous interior of coloured light, is simply unlike anything else in Spain. The Basílica de San Isidoro contains exceptional Romanesque art in the Royal Pantheon, considered the Sistine Chapel of Romanesque painting. León's tapas culture offers some of the best free tapas in Spain and exceptional cecina cured beef. The Picos de Europa are approximately one hour by road.
