Livingstone
Livingstone is Zambia's tourism capital and the gateway to Victoria Falls from the Zambian side, a charming colonial-era town providing extraordinary access to one of the world's greatest natural wonders, outstanding white water rafting on the Zambezi River, wildlife encounters in Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park including white rhino, and the historic Livingstone Museum chronicling the region's exploration history. Named after explorer David Livingstone, the town provides an excellent base for experiencing the Falls and the Zambezi.
Elect's take
"Livingstone provides the Zambian perspective on Victoria Falls, often quieter than the Zimbabwean side, and the combination of the Falls, the white water rafting and the wildlife of Mosi-oa-Tunya creates a destination that delivers extraordinary natural drama alongside genuine relaxation."
Victoria Falls, known locally as Mosi-oa-Tunya (the Smoke that Thunders), is one of the world's largest waterfalls and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, with the Zambian side providing closer and often less crowded views, particularly of the dramatic Eastern Cataract and Knife Edge Bridge. The Zambezi River below the Falls offers some of the world's best white water rafting, with grade five rapids providing an adrenaline-filled experience. Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park provides excellent wildlife viewing including white rhino, giraffe and zebra in a compact and accessible reserve. The Livingstone Museum, Zambia's oldest and largest museum, provides excellent context on the region's history and David Livingstone's expeditions. Sunset cruises on the Upper Zambezi are beautiful.
