Victoria Falls

Victoria Falls, known as Mosi-oa-Tunya (the Smoke that Thunders), is one of the world's seven natural wonders, a UNESCO World Heritage Site where the Zambezi River plunges over 100 metres across a width of nearly 1.7 kilometres creating a spectacle of mist, rainbows and thunderous sound visible and audible for miles. From the Zambian side, visitors can experience the Knife Edge Bridge, Devil's Pool during the dry season, and outstanding adventure activities including bungee jumping, white water rafting and helicopter flights over the Falls.

Elect's take

"Victoria Falls is one of the few natural sights that genuinely exceeds the hype — the scale, the power and the sheer sensory experience of mist, sound and rainbows create something that I find difficult to adequately describe even after multiple visits."

Victoria Falls forms the border between Zambia and Zimbabwe, with the Zambian side providing dramatic close-up views of the Eastern Cataract and access to the Knife Edge Bridge, where visitors can stand amid the spray with views of the main falls and the gorge below. During the dry season (typically August to January), Devil's Pool — a natural rock pool at the very edge of the Falls — becomes accessible for those brave enough to swim to its edge. The Victoria Falls Bridge, connecting Zambia and Zimbabwe, offers bungee jumping and bridge swing activities with the gorge below. Helicopter flights over the Falls provide a spectacular aerial perspective of the full scale of the cataract. The Zambezi National Park on the Zimbabwean side and Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park on the Zambian side both offer wildlife viewing.
