Wuyishan
Wuyishan is a spectacular UNESCO World Heritage Site in Fujian province, a dramatic landscape of red sandstone peaks, clear mountain rivers and ancient tea culture that produces Wuyi oolong, considered by many experts to be the finest tea in China. From the Nine Bend River bamboo raft journeys and the extraordinary hanging coffins of the ancient Yue people to the Da Hong Pao tea bushes worth millions per kilogram and the Tiger's Den walk, Wuyishan is one of China's most extraordinary and least visited natural destinations.
Elect's take
"Wuyishan is one of the places in China that most exceeded my expectations. The combination of the extraordinary landscape, the river journeys through the peaks and the tea culture creates something genuinely unique and remarkably beautiful."
The Nine Bend River (Jiuqu Xi) bamboo raft journey, drifting for 10 kilometres through the dramatic red sandstone peaks of Wuyishan, is one of the most beautiful river journeys in China. The Da Hong Pao tea bushes on the cliff faces of the Wuyi Mountains are the source of the world's most expensive tea, with the original six bushes protected as national treasures. The Wuyishan scenic area contains ancient hanging coffins of the Yue people, suspended in cliff faces thousands of years ago. The Tiger's Den walk, a three-hour circuit of the main peaks, provides spectacular scenery. Wuyi oolong tea experiences — from picking to processing to tasting — are outstanding.
