Lake Windermere stretches for ten miles through the heart of the Lake District. Bowness-on-Windermere has excellent restaurants and boat hire. Ambleside provides access to outstanding fell walks. Hill Top, Beatrix Potter's farmhouse at Near Sawrey, is one of the most visited National Trust properties in England. The Coniston Water and Hawkshead village are beautiful alternatives.
