From the Royal Opera House and the Natural History Museum to the beautiful Mutrah district, Muscat rewards every day of exploration.
Elect's take
"Muscat has a beauty and an authenticity that I find genuinely refreshing in the Gulf context. The combination of the Grand Mosque, the Muttrah Souk, the dramatic mountain setting and the warmth of Omani hospitality creates something that I rate among the finest city experiences in the Middle East."
The Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque is one of the most beautiful mosques in the Islamic world, a masterpiece of contemporary Islamic architecture completed in 2001 with the world's second largest hand-loomed carpet covering 4000 square metres of the main prayer hall. The Muttrah Souk, one of the oldest markets in the Arabian Peninsula, provides an authentic and manageable souk experience of silver, incense, traditional clothing and local produce. The Corniche provides a beautiful waterfront walk between Muttrah and the royal harbour. The Royal Opera House Muscat, opened in 2011, provides world class opera and classical music performances. The Al Alam Palace is the official ceremonial palace of the Sultan.
