Niswa
Nizwa — the most common spelling — is Oman's most historically significant interior city, a former capital of the Imamate and a destination of extraordinary heritage combining a massive 17th century circular fort, one of Oman's most vibrant traditional souks, excellent date and silver markets and beautiful access to the villages and archaeological sites of the Al Hajar Mountains. Often combined with Jabal Akhdar, Nizwa provides the most complete introduction to traditional Omani culture available in the country.
Elect's take
"Nizwa is where Omani culture feels most authentic and most unchanged. The fort is magnificent, the Friday goat market is extraordinary and the combination of the souk, the dates and the silver creates a genuinely memorable cultural immersion."
Nizwa Fort, completed in 1668, has one of the largest circular towers in Arabia rising 40 metres and providing outstanding views over the date palm gardens, old town and surrounding mountains. The Nizwa Souk is one of the finest traditional markets in Oman with outstanding sections for silver jewellery, traditional Omani kumma caps, incense and fresh produce. The famous Friday morning goat market provides one of the most atmospheric and genuinely traditional experiences in the Gulf. The ancient archaeology of the area, including the UNESCO listed falaj systems, is outstanding. Jabrin Castle, 45 minutes west, provides an extraordinary painted ceiling experience.
