Mannheim
Mannheim is a major city at the confluence of the Rhine and Neckar rivers in Baden-Württemberg, known for its unique grid-pattern Baroque city layout, the magnificent Mannheim Palace — one of the largest Baroque palaces in Europe, the birthplace of the bicycle and the automobile with significant technology museum heritage, and an excellent contemporary arts scene at the Kunsthalle Mannheim. As a practical gateway to the Rhine-Neckar region including Heidelberg, Mannheim offers a distinctive urban character of its own.
Elect's take
"Mannheim's grid layout is unlike any other German city — it genuinely feels different to walk through — and the combination of the Baroque palace, the automotive heritage and the proximity to Heidelberg makes it an interesting and practical base."
Mannheim's city centre is laid out in a unique grid pattern of lettered and numbered blocks (the Quadrate), a rare example of planned Baroque urban design in Germany. Mannheim Palace, one of the largest Baroque palaces in Europe, was built for the Electors Palatine and now houses part of the University of Mannheim alongside beautifully restored state rooms. The city has significant claims to automotive history — Karl Benz built and tested his first automobile here, and Karl Drais invented the bicycle in Mannheim in 1817. The Kunsthalle Mannheim is one of Germany's finest collections of 19th and 20th century art in a striking contemporary extension. Heidelberg is approximately 20 minutes away.
