Khao Lak is a beautiful and relatively relaxed beach destination on the Andaman coast in Phang Nga province, north of Phuket, combining long sandy beaches backed by hills and national park, outstanding access to the Similan and Surin Islands — among the world's finest diving destinations, the Khao Lak-Lam Ru National Park, and a more laid-back atmosphere than Phuket while remaining within reach of the same spectacular Andaman scenery. The Similan Islands National Marine Park, accessible by speedboat from Khao Lak in approximately 1-1.5 hours, is considered one of the top diving destinations in the world, with extraordinary visibility, dramatic granite boulder formations and rich marine life including manta rays and whale sharks during the season. The Surin Islands further north offer similarly pristine diving and snorkelling. Khao Lak's own beaches are long, relatively uncrowded stretches of sand backed by casuarina trees and hills. The Khao Lak-Lam Ru National Park provides jungle walking, waterfalls and viewpoints over the coastline. The area was significantly affected by the 2004 tsunami and several memorials provide a moving and important historical context.
